About museum fund

The fund formatted period is from 1916 till present. After the museum liquidation in 1940/1941, during World War II and years after the war, the fund have been partly removed or given to other museums, archives and institutions. The museum was returned a part of that fund at present. The museum collection has items of the 15th century, but the main and the most important part of the fund are created by Latvia’s 20th century military-political documents and items. The museum renovation in 1990 gave many presents from sympathetic people; presented items had been hidden for a long time during the period of Soviet occupation.
The basic fund of the museum has 22 collections with more than 200 thousand items at present.

The group of written items consists of cartography collection and fund of different documents.
This fund is divided on 5 collections by principle of chronology and theme, according to the structure of investigation work in departments:
Documents of the new time period – started from the second part of the 19th century till the 1st World War beginning;
Documents of the 1st World War period – 1914-1918;

(Documents of the Civil War in Russia and Latvian refugees up to 1926)
- Documents of Latvia state independence formation and existence period – 1918 – 1920;
- Documents of the 2nd World War and post-war national opposition period – 1939 till the middle of 50s;
- Documents of post-war occupied Latvia and Latvians deportation period as well as documents of renovated Latvia independence.

The fund of documents is added by:
- Collection of historical books;
- Collection of press;
- Collection of cartographical materials.

A group of represented items consists of:
Collection of philocards;
Collection of stamps;
Collection of posters;
Collection of art items;
Photo fund - is divided by principle of chronology and theme, as well as the fund of documents, it has 5 collections of photopositive and separate collection of photonegative.

A group of important items is divided on 4 collections types:
Collection of historical items (solders uniform, footwear, accoutrement, dishes, social items etc);
Collection of money;
Collection of banistics;
Collection of weapons.
