Call for papers

The Latvian War Museum department “Christmas Battles Museum” invites you to participate in the international scientific conference that will take place on 3 December 2026, in Jelgava (Latvia). The topic of the scientific conference will be dedicated to studies of the First World War from the perspective of history, philology, and other humanities.

The First World War (at that time – the Great War, 1914–1918) caused widespread changes: new ideas, knowledge, skills, experiences, and traditions were rapidly introduced, essentially transforming the European and Latvian society in diverse ways. Changes occurred in the shadow of the war, within the individual and social contexts determined by the events and experiences of wartime. Also, new ways of human self-awareness and reflection were formed.

The focus of the conference is on the creative individual, the texts and artefacts they create, or culture created during or shortly after the war. The creative individual is a humanist response to the devastation and destruction of war, the cultural texts and artefacts they create – a translation of the world into the language of humanity.

We invite you to submit scientific papers for the conference on any of these topics or other related subjects:

- studies of the First World War: sources, methods, and approaches; collections of memory institutions;
- a creative individual during and after the war, the concept of resilience; the concept of liminality;
- the impact of war experience and memories in cultural texts and artefacts; Trench Art;
- social/everyday and cultural life of military units during wartime, the formation of post-war memory, and remembrance;
- cultural activities of society, everyday life, traditions, and holidays under war conditions.
