Whispers of Freedom: The Loss and Regaining of Latvia's Independence. 1940 / 1990

The years 1940, 1945, and 1990 were fateful turning points in the history of the Latvian state and nation. However, in contemporary Latvian society, opinions about this historical period remain polarized. While one part of society condemns the criminal occupation of the state and its consequences, another part denies this fact or does not consider it significant.

The exhibition's creators, through carefully selected exhibits—symbols—aim to evoke an emotional experience in visitors, while also fostering an understanding of the decisive events in the history of the Latvian state and people. The exhibition highlights how skillfully various totalitarian regimes manipulated the concept of freedom, and encourages today’s visitors to reflect on the attributes that define their own freedoms in the present day.
